Winter School Methods in Transitions
11 mrt, 2019Struggling with your research tools? Interested in the specifics of research methods and methodologies in sustainability transitions research? Enthusiastic about exchanging and learning with and from like-minded? Apply for the Winter School “Methodologies and Methods for Sustainability Transitions Research”!
The NEST PhD-Network and the STRN methodologies thematic group jointly invite PhD students and junior researchers to a Winter School on “Methodologies and Methods for Sustainability Transitions Research”.
The School’s main objective is to foster a more informed discussion about methodology, enabling researchers to develop more robust and reflexive research strategies in transition studies. The methodological discussion will particularly focus on the specific methodological requirements of complex (socio-technical) systems and sustainability transitions. The school will thereby consider both, methodologies which are commonly used in transition studies as well as methodologies “outside” the transition studies field, which could be used (more widely) in transition studies.
The school offers an exciting five-day programme ranging from inputs by senior scholars in the sustainability transitions field; plenary exchanges with other participants to in-depth small-group work sessions offering room for your individual research issues.
Appreciating that the selection of methodologies and methods lays the foundation of your research projects, ensures robustness and validity of results and is therefore critical for the overall quality of your research work – the winter school aims at helping you to increase your understanding of your own methodological approach, appreciating others and to increase your versatility in dealing with differences between approaches.
Main topics
The winter school is organised by Jonathan Köhler, Georg Holtz, Lea Fünfschilling, DRIFT’s senior researcher Julia Wittmayer and the NEST organisers. The winter school will be hosted by Jonathan Köhler and Susan Muehlemeier.
Main topics will be:
- Qualitative, quantitative and mixed research methods in transition studies
- Transdisciplinary research and the role of the researcher
- Methodological challenges for studies on the Global South
- Studying different actors – implications for method
Besides rich inputs and discussions with senior scholars and participants, the school will also support deep group work sessions on the methodological challenges in your individual PhD project. It will be a great opportunity to learn and share research insights and to connect and enjoy a fun time with fellow Sustainability Transitions researchers.
You can find the complete program here.
